For a while now i have wanted to get into fly fishing because fishing for Roach, Crap etc. is getting a bit boring, but i cant find any rods and even if i did i wouldnt know which one was right for me. Im 14 and have been fishing for about 6 months. I want a rod which i will be able to take to Lanzarote as they catch big fish on flys. Any reccomendations?
Cranfield
Craig, what do you want to catch with your fly rod ?
Trout, pike, salmon,sea fish ?

You mention Lanzarote, what "big fish" are you referring to ?

A bit more information needed, Mate. smile.gif

I would mainly be fishing for Pike and on holiday sea fish up to 15 pounds. Price up to 30 pounds- Tight budget!!!!
Cranfield
Craig, A Pike/Saltwater Fly Rod will be about 9ft long and made for line weight 8/9 or 9/10.

This is what you would ask for when you go into the Tackle Shop.
However, I don,t think you will find one for under £30.00. The cheapest I have seen have been over £70.00.

Perhaps you should think again.
If you really want to try fly fishing, either save up for the Pike/Salt Rod, or look for a trout water near you, buy a days fishing and hire their equipment.
This will give you some idea, if it is something you want to carry on with.

I,m still not sure what you are going to catch in the sea off Lanzarote with a fly rod.
The only thing I have seen there that take lures, are tuna and they were so few, that I wouldn, take a rod all that way to try to catch one.
The charter boat I went on, had all the equipment you needed, included in the trip price.

Best of luck. smile.gif

Go onto www.tacklebargains.co.uk/acatolog/online_Catalogue_Normark_Cortland_60.html

Do it exactly like tat with the letters i have put in capitals in capitals.

Its called Master Line Xl Combo

Is this alright?
Craig Robins
Where the spaces are there is _
Cranfield
Craig, that combo is suitable for line weight 6/7, which ,in my opinion, is too light for pike or sea fly fishing.
As I said ,you should be looking for 9/10 weight.

I have looked on a number of sites and I cannot find any combo to the specification you require, under £100.

You may have to resign yourself to saving up your money, unless someone else has any suggestions. smile.gif

I'd be looking for at least a 9# more likely a 10#.

I tried with my 10ft 8# and casting the big flies was almost impossible on this setup. Look for a cheap pike setup and take it from there. 9-9 1/2ft too.

Garfish, mackerel and horse mackerel amongst others.....but make sure you fish a single fly!
Cranfield
Greg, It was the "15lb fish" that Craig mentioned, that confused me.
The mackerel and gars don,t grow that big. smile.gif

There'll be mullet and trigger fish too, if it's anything like Fuerta Ventura. Use fry lures and shrimp and crab imitations.

I took an 9 foot, 8-weight on holiday a few years back but that was only for targetting fish up to a couple of pounds.

I certainly wouldn't recommend trying to hook-up a 15lb striped tuna on the same gear - you'd just be spooled!

...at least, not without having a quarter of a mile of good backing and a fast boat... you might make it then. Having watched Steve Starling (Rex Hunt's buddy) land a few GT's, Tuna and the like on 8 and 9 weight fly gear, it's certainly far from impossible - best to have the back-up afforded by a boat, or be really sure that your backing knots are stronger than your leader! ;-)

Cheers,

Sorry I ment maximum 15 pounds i am looking for 1 to 5 if possible. Is that rod on the internet any good? will it do me?
Spiderfan
Hi Craig,

It’s a tough call to say whether it will ‘do you’ or not, only you can decide that.

In my experience you pay for quality and better quality generally means better performance. Given that some fly-rods can cost in excess of £400/£500, this Normark kit can be said to be at the ‘economy’ end.

That said, there should be no reason to suggest it can’t do what you’re expecting of it, as long as you’re not expecting to punch tight loops with an 8-weight line and a 4” lure on the end 30 yards into a stiff on-shore wind! Being able to do that relies on both skill and the quality of your gear - it’s only a rod and reel after all.

Remember that salt-water is highly corrosive and you should rinse rod, reel and line well with plenty of fresh-water straight after use.

Thanx Spiderfan
