Going to hopefully do a lot of saltwater flyfishing for bass this year in the Mull of Galloway area. I reckon I will have to get a line tray to stop the flyline getting shredded very quickly.
Seen a commerial one in my local tackle shop for £20.Is it worth the money I am thinking to myself?Could make one from a washing up dish that should work fine and cost coppers.
You thoughts on this matter would be most appreciated gentlemen.

I am sure if you crawled to Newt and said "pretty please" he could install a Jasper Avatar for you to fit in with your profession mate.

Snatcher,
A few tips about line trays for the salt.Unless you are wading in a raging surf, avoid collapsable bowls.I use the Orvis rigid bowl

but at £39 it isnt cheap, but a lovely bit of kit. You can get a similar one from LLBean for about £20 , but you need to get it from the U.S.
Making your own from a washing up bowl is an idea. A piece of bungee cord for a belt and a few cable tie 'bristles' in the bottom to help prevent tangles. I gave up doing this after the 15th attempt at getting it how I wanted it failed.

I made one years ago and it is still going strong. I used a couple of wire coathangers for the frame and cut up some old waterproof trousers for the "bag". Cost; £0.0p! The plans were in the now defunct "Angling" magazine.. Tell me if you're interested and I will show you it.

Fishing place where there is a tide, and surf is a total nightmare. Ive not got a line tray but i wish i had! The waves, tide tangle the fly line at your feet all over the shop. If it doesnt tangle round your legs about 50 times/tied itself in improsible knots or tangled itself in bladder wrack, boulders and rocks then your doing seriously well.

OK - I gave my new line tray a crack on Saturday on Loch Beanie. Absolutely horrible. Wondering if I need to keep trying, but basically I had to concentrate too hard to get the line into it, and then it tangled a lot. In moving water or with heather round my feet I'm sure I'd reconsider, but I'd not bother again in still water.
Cheers

Thanks Phil most impressed with your home made line tray.
Just had a thought as to what may be ideal for the job. My good lady keeps getting these wall planters for the garden. You know the sort of thing I mean. Ridgid plastic tub, rounded on one side and flat on the other for wall fixing. May have a scout around and see what there is up for grabs. Think they are about £1 to £2 range. Will be simple to put some loops on to go onto your belt. Will let you know what happens team.

Jim must have binned the keep net but found an old collapsible groundbait tub that must be about 35 years old.
Made of bright yellow, thick pvc material.
Metal coathook bent around the top rim, 4 thick bagties looped on to attach to my dressing gown cord and I am in business
I am not a style guru, love the diy stuff

Snatcher,
Important safety tip.Whatever you do to strap yourself to your bowl make sure it has the abitilty to be released quickly should you get washed off the rocks or swamped by an unexpected wave.

Snatcher, I use a kidney shaped laundry basket with a belt through it. In the base I have glued 6 of the cone shaped nozzles off of sealant tubes and it works perfectly even in the surf. Problem is I don't know if they come in yellow to match the dressing gown belt

MY FIRST POST !!
I cannot recommend a line tray enough. Whilst fishing a local reservoir recently, I stood on my fly line which was on a sharp rock. it cut through it like a hot knife through butter - I went out and got a line tray straight away - best £20.00 with hind sight I have evr spent. akes a bit of getting used to

Today I saw Snatcher's new line tray and I was speechless (well almost!). He may want to patent it so we decided against posting up a photo. Without giving too much away, it is collapsable for convenience, highly visible for safety, instantly recognisable, and infinitely functional! The only problem I saw was the pyjama cord which was slightly frayed but I'm sure this bit could be hidden in the groin area so that Snatcher's pristine image could be maintained. I'm sure when you see it you will all be equally impressed.
P.S. Snatcher - that's £10 you owe me.
